What is considered a medical need for donor milk?

Medical need means your child’s doctor has identified a health reason that makes donor milk essential for treatment or recovery. This could include conditions such as:
  • Prematurity or very low birth weight (born before 32 weeks or weighing less than 1500g)
  • Digestive or metabolic disorders, or recovery from intestinal surgery when digestive needs require additional support
  • Failure to thrive (difficulty gaining weight despite feeding efforts)
  • Severe formula intolerance with documented feeding difficulties or medical contraindications to formula
  • Serious heart conditions or organ transplant care
  • Other significant health issues where donor milk supports recovery and growth

We understand some families prefer donor milk for nutritional reasons, but because donor milk is a limited resource, we must prioritize babies with medical indications.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Donor milk is typically used as a short-term support during critical stages of your child’s treatment or recovery. We encourage you to discuss with your pediatrician both the role of donor milk and alternative feeding options to ensure a smooth transition when appropriate.
